Our Public Safety Agenda |
1 |
Hire more police officers.
While new strategies to fight crime and violence may
be helpful, Oakland simply needs more police officers.
The city currently employs 749 officers, far below
the national average 1,075 officers for cities our
size. |
2 |
Move uniformed police officers
from behind desks and onto the streets.
Many administrative functions of the Police Department can be completed by civilians
so that sworn officers can use their expertise on the beat. |
3 |
Mandate the use of a public
safety management and accountability systems. Software
that ensures responding officers have all the information
they need before walking into a situation and helps
us identify crime trends is key to the success of
our force. |
4 |
Equip police and emergency vehicles with Global
Positioning Systems (GPS).
Help navigating unfamiliar areas could decrease response
time significantly. GPS
also makes sure we can track officers on the beat at all times. |
5 |
Demand greater Measure Y accountability.
Measure Y is a critical part of our crime-fighting infrastructure,
stopping crime before it begins with at-risk youth.
The city must conduct an immediate audit to ensure
Measure Y’s $6 million are being spent on the
most effective programs.
